Civil Defense Litigation

Municipal Liability

Foran Glennon’s work in municipal liability defense covers a wide range of cases, including the defense of diverse civil rights actions encompassing both First Amendment and Fourteenth Amendment claims. We have also defended police personnel against claims of excessive force and false arrest and have represented numerous school districts in the wide variety of claims that can arise in the educational setting.

We understand that what is at stake is not only potential financial liability but a loss of reputation for the individual whose conduct is on trial and a loss of the public’s confidence in the organization’s ability to carry out its mandate and fulfill its mission. As a result, we strive to develop a defense strategy which balances these sometimes competing interests, and we work closely with the client in adopting an approach which serves all of the client’s interests.

In addition to our proven trial skills, our practice group offers the unique benefit of prosecutorial experience. This gives us special insight into the workings of the criminal court system and police procedures and enables us to establish effective working relationships with law enforcement and other governmental personnel. This knowledge serves us well when we consult with organizations on the nature of the exposures they face and how to manage and avoid these exposures.

Simply stated, our goal is to assist our municipal clients in developing strategies for minimizing exposure to civil rights claims and resolving those claims in ways which align with management’s operational and public relations goals for the organization.
